Aircraft Control via Variable Cant-Angle Winglets

چکیده
This paper investigates a novel method for the control of “morphing” aircraft. The concept consists of a pair of winglets with adjustable cant angle, independently actuated and mounted at the tips of a baseline flying wing. The general philosophybehind the conceptwas that for specificflight conditions such as a coordinated turn, the use of two control devices would be sufficient for adequate control. Computations with a vortex lattice model and subsequent wind-tunnel tests demonstrate the viability of the concept, with individual and/or dual winglet deflection producing multi-axis coupled control moments. Comparisons between the experimental and computational results showed reasonable to good agreement, with the major discrepancies thought to be due to wind-tunnel model aeroelastic effects.

Commercial Aircraft Performance Improvement Using Winglets
Aerodynamic drag force breakdown of a typical transport aircraft shows that lift-induced drag can amount to as much as 40% of total drag at cruise conditions and 80-90% of the total drag in take-off configuration. One way of reducing lift-induced drag is by using wing-tip devices. By applying several types of winglets, which are already used on commercial airplanes, we study their influence on ...
متن کاملTip Extensions, Winglets, and C-wings: Conceptual Design and Optimization
Conceptual wing design analysis methods are combined with numerical optimization to find minimum drag wings subject to constraints on lift, weight, pitching moment, and stall speed. Minimum drag tip extensions and winglets are compared using nonlinear optimization. The minimum drag trapezoidal tip device depends on the ratio of the maneuver lift coefficient to the cruise lift coefficient, altho...
متن کاملA Variable Neighborhood Search approach for the aircraft conflict resolution problem
A metaheuristic approach based on Variable Neighborhood Search to tackle the enroute aircraft conflict resolution problem is presented. The three maneuvers (velocity, heading angle and altitude level variations) are allowed to be performed. Based on geometric rules, we can determine if a conflict situation occurs between each pair of aircraft under consideration. As three different maneuvers co...
متن کاملNonplanar Wing Concepts for Increased Aircraft Efficiency
1. Summary Nonplanar wings offer the possibility of reduced drag compared with planar wings of the same span and lift. However, aircraft are not compared on the basis of drag with fixed span and lift, making the integration and assessment of nonplanar wing concepts complex. This paper deals with some of these issues. A brief review of several concepts from winglets to ring wings is followed by ...
متن کاملModel of Unsteady Aerodynamic Coefficients of a Delta Wing Aircraft at High Angles of Attack
Several approaches for modelling the longitudinal aerodynamic coefficients of a fighter aircraft at high angles of attack, including the unsteady effects are presented. A traditional approach where the model of the coefficient arises in the form of the steady and unsteady effects, the unsteady effect being modelled by means of transfer functions. The second approach uses an internal variable de...
